Avenida - Manila Grand Opera Hotel

September 2, 2008

During my travel last August 30, I came back to the site where the Manila Grand Opera House stood. I was amazed with this new structure constructed right beside the LRT Doroteo Jose station. I’m lucky because I didn’t expect that the new multimillion-peso hotel will be inaugurated on the same day.

The inauguration was attended by the president herself, Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, the first gentleman Mike Arroyo and some senators as special guests, among them Senate President Manny Villar, and Senators Loren Legarda and Aquilino Pimentel.

Some of the performers were Asia’s queen of songs, Pilita Corrales, who sang some old songs together with Nolyn Cabahug. Before the celebration, street dancers performed in front of the hotel in Doroteo Jose street that made the celebration more festive.

The inauguration also served as the celebration of the owner, Cabangon Chua’s birthday. The opera house, which by the 60s had been transformed into a movie theater, was acquired by Cabangon Chua from the heirs of Don Toribio Teodoro. Cabangon Chua was better known then as a movie-house magnate, with 30 theaters under his belt.

The eight-story hotel has a Figaro coffee shop on the first floor and a Chinese restaurant with a chef imported from Hong Kong. In front of the hotel, another significant structure was demolished, the old Mapua Institute of Technology building was finally converted into a large provincial bus parking lot.

I never thought that someone would try to invest a multi-million peso hotel in this area of Manila, however, I hope that the opening of this deluxe hotel will also start modernizing the structures of the area, and I hope that the government should also preserve the historical significance of these historical structures.

Just my honest and humble opinion.

this hotel sucks! i used to work here im a pioneer. kilalang kilala ko mga staff at may ari ng hotel na ito. honestly ang SAMA ng ugali nila specially the managers. ang lakas ng pulitika sa loob ng hotel na ito. grabe ang inggitan! at ang food sobrang yaki tlga! un international head chef my god ang hirap nyang iexplain. he is the worst of all people that i ever met. kung sa palagay nila mganda sya tignan sa labas sa loob wla silang idea kung gano kapangit.

Posted by nana at February 24, 2009, 8:43 pm

the accusations that were thrown towards the owners were derogatory and unjust. the hotel is an affiliate of a number of other hotels and oranizations, wherein employees have stayed for so many number of years. how can they accuse the owners as such, where even employees can attest that the reason why they have stayed with the company is because of the owners and on how they are being treated, as family!

Posted by pen at March 3, 2009, 11:57 am

I agree with Pen.

Obviously, whoever wrote those false accusations was just sour-graping.

I am a business owner myself and also a business consultant. The problem with some of our kababayans when they were fired our from their job because of their own undoing, they tend to put the blame to others. Let’s stop this victim story!

When opportunity comes, let’s take it and love it especially now that it’s very hard to find a job.

I will not regret firing erring employees (despite the fact that you called their attention to shape up!), who feel that they’re indispensable.

With all due respect to the ones who maligned and hurdled false accusations to the family of Ambassador Cabangong Chua, I personally doubt the veracity of the accusation. Among other Filipino-Chinese businessmen in the country, the Cabangon Chua are one of the few decent businessmen who practice fairness, value loyalty and reward according to merit.

I just hope these malicious attacks will cease henceforth.

Regards…

nalilito ako sa mga comments dito. 3x na kong pabalik-balik dito dahil ang sarap talaga ng pagkain. mura lang ang accomodation 1500 ang pinakamaliit, 3500 and then 4500. laging puno ang function rooms nila. mababait naman ang mga staffs nila. compare to other hotels ibang klase ang pagkain dito. babalik ulit kami!

visited the hotel, and it was indeed beautiful for what it is. it exceeded my expectation. there was a lot of effort to make it grandiose. the rooms were well maintained. i am just way concerned by the surrounding areas. i’m not sure what’s their deal with the local government, but they (local govt) should help clean up and develop the beautification of the area. ang pangit ang baho ang dumi and really unsafe ang lugar where this hotel is. i’m afraid without further development of the area this hotel is fated to go to the dumps…and be a soon to be glorified motel. sayang ang effort
